About this module
A short, focused module on the practice that prevents more infections than anything else you will do. Covers why hands transmit infection, the World Health Organization 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene, correct alcohol rub and hand wash technique, when alcohol is not enough, skin care, and the realities of hand hygiene in home and community settings where there is no clinical basin in sight.
Who it is for
Every worker who has physical contact with participants or their environment — support workers, personal care workers, allied health assistants, cleaners, cooks and drivers.
What you will be able to do
- Explain how hands transmit infection between people and surfaces
- Identify all 5 WHO Moments for Hand Hygiene in real support tasks
- Perform alcohol-based hand rub and hand washing with correct technique and duration
- Decide correctly between alcohol rub and soap and water in any given situation
- Maintain skin integrity and manage the causes of occupational dermatitis
- Apply hand hygiene in homes, vehicles and community settings without clinical facilities
