PEG and Enteral Feeding Support
Enteral nutrition theory for high intensity supports — tube types, bolus and pump feeding, flushing, medications, stoma site care, and the complications you must escalate.
Important — this module does not certify you
IMPORTANT — Non-accredited Certificate of Completion covering underpinning knowledge only. Enteral feeding is a High Intensity Daily Personal Activity. Before providing this support you must also have participant-specific, practical competency assessment and sign-off by a registered nurse or appropriately qualified health practitioner, and you must follow the participant's individual mealtime management and enteral feeding plan. This module does not authorise you to perform PEG feeds.
About this module
Enteral feeding is a High Intensity Daily Personal Activity under the NDIS Practice Standards. This module builds the underpinning knowledge: how PEG, PEG-J, balloon gastrostomy and NG tubes differ, safe bolus, gravity and pump feeding, water flushes, giving medications through a tube, caring for the stoma site, and recognising blockage, leakage, granulation, dislodgement, aspiration and refeeding risk. Practical sign-off by a registered nurse is required before you feed anyone.
Who it is for
Support workers and personal care workers delivering high intensity supports, SIL staff, and team leaders supervising enteral feeding supports.
What you will be able to do
- Identify the common enteral tube types and how their care differs
- Describe safe positioning, tube checks and hygiene before every feed
- Explain bolus, gravity and pump feeding methods and when each is used
- Perform water flushes correctly and explain why they matter
- Support medication administration via an enteral tube safely
- Recognise blockage, leakage, granulation, dislodgement and aspiration, and escalate correctly
