IMPORTANT — Non-accredited Certificate of Completion covering underpinning knowledge only. Stoma care is a High Intensity Daily Personal Activity under the NDIS Practice Standards. Before providing this support you must also have participant-specific practical competency assessment and sign-off by a registered nurse or stomal therapy nurse, and follow the participant's individual plan. This module does not authorise you to provide stoma care.

About this module

Supporting someone with a stoma well is a mix of practical skill and genuine tact. This module covers the three main stoma types and what each produces, one-piece and two-piece appliances, emptying and changing safely, protecting peristomal skin, diet and output, recognising complications from retraction to prolapse to high-output dehydration, the Stoma Appliance Scheme, and how to support a participant to manage their own stoma wherever they can.

Support workers and personal care workers delivering high intensity supports, SIL and group home staff, and team leaders supervising stoma care supports.

What you will be able to do

  • Distinguish colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy and the output each produces
  • Identify appliance types and select consumables appropriately
  • Empty and change an appliance safely, maintaining dignity throughout
  • Assess stoma and peristomal skin and recognise when something is wrong
  • Recognise complications including high-output dehydration and obstruction
  • Support a participant's independence, body image and access to the Stoma Appliance Scheme
